Michael French public does not know you, are you ever come play
in France
Of course I would love to play in France, but I have not made
connections with festivals & concert promoters yet - although, I am
trying. I will be in Europe next year in May and again in October, so
I am looking out for possibilities to perform in France at those times.
you sing also, you play solo and group! How many cds as you do?
You can by on your site! Did you also a DVD, you can buy your
tablature!!
I always sing maybe 2 or 3 songs in a concert. I enjoy it, and it
gives variety to the audience. I have released 8 CD in total, & they
are all available on my website www.michaelfix.com, or other sites
like www.cdbaby.com
I don't have a dvd yet, but I do have a songbook - 10 pieces with
notation & TAB. The book is called Noted! and is also available on my
website.
what are your guitar models, for your shows what’s your
equipment to amplify your guitar
When I travel, I try to travel light & have a very simple setup. I
use a Maton signature model guitar: "Michael Fix Custom" and I use
AER amplification. For me, the Maton and AER work perfectly together.
I also use an FX box, a Yamaha Magic Stomp pedal that I use just for
reverbs & delays.
you are Australian as you play on shows with Tommy Emmanuel! A
television .can you tell us other acoustics guitarists Australian?
There are some great players here, especially in the acoustic
fingerstyle scene. Tommy has influenced many young players. Some
names to look out for are Joe Robinson, Kieren Murphy, Jason
McGregor, Bryan Brown, Sam Shepherd. These are all fantastic young
players. Some established names here include Bruce Mathiske & Nick
Charles, all wonderful players!
is it there a festival in Australian fingerstyle guitar you said
you wanted to come play in France .as you know Marcel Dadi ? You
know French guitarists, François Sciortino or Eric Gombart
There isn't really a fingerstyle festival in Australia, apart from a
classical guitar festival in Darwin. We have 1 major guitar festival
in Adelaide each November, this has been running only 2 years. We are
a small population and it is hard to have such a specialist festival.
I know the music of Marcel Dadi. I think anyone who listens to Chet
Atkins (as I have) learns about the other players who were influenced
by Chet's style. I have met Francois Sciortino a number of times, &
we have played together also. I like his music very much! He is a
great guy and a really great player.
think you give guitar lessons with internet
It is your music aired on radio in Australia
It is very rare to hear any instrumental music on the radio in
Australia, (except for specialised classical music stations), but
when I release new CDs, I usually achieve some airplay on ABC radio -
our national non-commercial broadcaster.
I write a lot of music that is used in television and advertising,
music for programmes and documentaries, but this is usually anonymous
music!
your music is very joyful, it is your character you other
compositions for a forthcoming cads .do you like classical
arrangements; bourrée, toccata, Hungarian …you play a classical
guitar?
I like to think that my music reflects my personality. Mostly I am a
happy person, & the music reflects this. In fact, I have recently
written a new tune called "Happy to be happy" That's me! You can see
this on youtube: www.youtube.com/mfixyz
I love the classical arrangements, too, but I am not strictly a
classical guitarist. I just love the tunes, & it is a nice challenge
to make fresh, new arrangements of orchestral tunes. The purists
probably hate it, but the audiences love it!
you have recorded a CD with Rose Carléo. You sometimes play for
humanitarian causes?
Yes, music is a powerful emotional force, & I think it's incredible
that music has the power to change people's lives, so I try to use
music as a positive energy. "Reach Out to Me", a song composed with
Rose Carleo for "suicide awareness". It is a message of hope – a
message which states that, no matter how alone and without hope you
might feel, somewhere you will always find someone who has been there
too.
what are your plans, you told me you preparing a tour in Europe
what dates?
I will be in Europe all of May; Germany, Finland, Italy, and I hope I
can play Dunkurque as well! Then I return in October, which will be
mainly playing Germany.
Richard you live in Nashville in a way the city of guitar FINGERSTYLE
From the age of 5 years you've played with Chet Atkins, how it happened, this meeting
My father promoted a concert for Chet and Chet asked me to play on the show with him.
It was a great thrill for me. Chet has always been my biggest influence.
There are many very good guitarists in the United States, Buster B Jones, Tom bresh, Tommy Emmanuel .... You often have the opportunity to play together
Yes, it's always great fun to sit and pick with those guys.
Everyone always learns so much from each other and keeps eachother inspired.
You came to play in France in Douai, was the first time! Gombart Eric told me that you was a great guitarist that I should make you come to France we will find a
date for you is it that in general the American guitarists want to come play in France
Yes for sure. Every player I know always enjoys the trip when they go out to France to play. I have been out several times and played in various towns over the last 15 years or so. Usually I'll make a trip every year or two, but I'd certainly like to be able to play more shows out there if possible.
You only plays Kirk Sand! It is a signature model that you use in concert!
I've also been playing my Stonebridge steel string acoustic.
It's a wonderful guitar. The company is based in Canada and the instruments are made in the Czech Republic.
You know that many guitarists seeking to have tablature, it allows discover directories. Can we get your tabs, is there a book!
Craig Dobbins has tabbed a few of my recordings out.
You can check his tabs out at www. craigdobbins. com
Do you use the Internet to teach and how many CDs as you book
I have released 9 CD's and one DVD altogether.
Most are available at www. richardsmithmusic. com
Have you ever played with other guitarists Eric Gombart French, Jerome Malaval can be!
Yes. I played with Eric this March in Douai. I'ver know Jerome for a long time. I'm sure I've jammed with him. We play at the Chet Atkins festival here in Nashville every year.
In France there is almost no guitar on television in the United States, before there was "Ranch Party" with Merle Travis ... .. is what it still exists?
No, sadly, there is very rarely any picking on TV these days, but with youtube, the fans can see whatever they want to see.
It takes a while longer to get seen on youtube though. The airwaves are still the best way to get seen.
What are your plans 2009 a tour in Europe?
I'm out in the UK and Finland touring with my cellist wife in January. I'll be back over in Europe in May.
I still have some dates open in May, and might even be able to stay a little longer if There is a concert or two in France.
Please let me know if you can help put something together..??
Thanks,
Richard
Gareth you belong to the younger generation of talented guitarists promised a great international career, are you already come play in France!you know guitarist french!!
Yes, i played at the guitar festival in Nice in October and had a wonderful time! The people are so supportive towards my music. It was a very inspiring journey for me. Thank you!
How did you meet Tommy Emmanuel this meeting was very important for you
I first met Tommy when i was about 15 years old. I remember playing for him before a concert and he gave me advice on becoming a better musician and guitar player. Well, i took his advice and a few months later, i was given the opportunity to support Tommy at a local concert in Cardiff. It was then he got to watch me perform. While i was playing on stage, he rang the President of Chet Atkins Appreciation (CAAS), Mark Pritcher, on his mobile phone, and then i was invited to play at the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society in Nashville for the first time. I was hounored as you can imagine! so i guess it was very important for me.
On stage do you like the show; you give the impression of being comfortable, it is important for you to communicate with the public!
I really do love performing to people and connecting with an audience. Ive been playing gigs since i was 14, so i guess i have become comfortable with live situations by now. But to connect and communicate with an audience, you really need to be honest with them and with yourself.
Your directory is rather composed of times Jerry Reed, Merle Travis .. Did you also compositions, a CD!
I have a EP out now called Adrenaline Rush, which has a few of my compositions on there along with a few arrangements by Merle Travis and Jerry Reed.
You are self-taught, you remember the first piece of you that you played the guitar
The fisrt piece i learnt to play was Windy and Warm. then it all went down hill from there...
What are the guitarists with whom you played on stage.
Michael Fix says he loves make arrangements under classical
yourself are you doing arrangements
Ive performed and played with quite alot of guitarist now and its great for me because i can just watch and learn from all of them. But right now im really into arranging popular music and rock tunes. Anything really that speaks to my soul and personality.
What are your plans for 2009 concerts, cd and dvd ?
This year, i will be releasing a new cd and quite possible a dvd.
You think you use the video on the Internet to offer guitar lessons! Your compositions are they on tabs or only in your head
They are all in my head right now. But i plan at somepoint to sit down with someone who can score my music with me, seeing as i get many requests from fans who want to learn my compositions. Which is a wonderful feeling by the way!
Thank you to you for this interview I hope that we can see you sue scene with us soon
After your show which took place at Issoudun , FRANCE ? did you come back in this country since, for other performances!!
Yes, in 2004, I performed with Preston Reid and D.R. Auten at the Dunkerque Guitare Picking Festival. Both my wife and I loved France and would certainly come back if invited. The shows were put together very well with a fantastic crews and sound engineers who were quite good at getting the most out of the instruments. The promoters at both festivals were very kind to us and made each trip memorable. I would happily perform in France again.
If so , where. On the other hand, are you contemplating setting up some concerts in europ in 2009 !
I understood that you won the national fingerpicking guitar championship at Winfield .Therefore , I would appreciate your letting me have the terms and conditions regarding this competition !
In additiuon to your ability of composing music for both the theatre and the movie, is there any other sources to carry out your programme and with which musical instruments are you using gor that purpose !
Are you also influenced by well-known artists ; let's say Chet Etkins, Jerry Reed .. for instance.
Are you a self-taught musician ! what is your trainng background ! bearing in mind that you have also practised classical music , I think.
Furthermore, I know that you have issued two cds . Is there a tablature of yours to be given away or on sale through internet, as some of the guitarists do !
Do you get more contacts through internet to set up new guitar shows !
Have you also the intention of setting up some video training courses through internet !
Many thanks for our chattering together and let me look forward to meeting you in the future at my place at Bagneux (quite close to paris)
I think that you had the opportunity to attend the Nashville CAAS’s event, at which date!Caas (Chet Atkins Appreciation Society) is Nasville’s guitar Festival dedicated to the great Chet Atkins, the first time I went there was in 2001, I just heard that Chet passed away and I thought “I have to go!”, Tommy Emmanuel already told me to go there because it was a great thing to do for a guitar player, so I bought a ticket 10 days before the convention, and that was my first time.I arrived at the airport and Caas’ president, Mark Pritcher, came and picked me up; he asked me if I wanted to play the first day because a player was missing, at that time I never played a solo concert and I said “No, are you crazy?” I could only play four tunes! But I thought about it and decided to go, and that was my first solo show ever. Then he started to invite me almost every year. The great Marcel Dadi died in the TWA plane crash near New York returning from the festival.Do you have any comment about it?It’s one of the greatest guitar festivals in the world, so many great players, no competition, everyone is talking and playing with the others, Mason Williams (“Classical Gas” composer) once said: “It’s like having 1.000 people backstage”! I’m so honoured to be scheduled there, this year will be my 7th time. It’ll be a sad one again, Buster B.Jones just died…I would also appreciate your letting me have your impressions when you first met Tommy Emmanuel and in which circumstances. When you have performed some of his transcriptions , was it on his request or on a personal purpose?I met Tommy in 2000, a friend of mine gave me a copy of his first solo cd “Only” and I started transcribing some tunes, I always did that with music I liked, I could not understand what he was playing, so I figured it out.He came to Rome a few months after and I went to his show, we met for the first time and I gave him some tablatures of his music (4 songs), he looked at them and he asked me: “Where did you get them?” and I answered: “I didn’t get them, I made them!”.So he was very kind, he invited me to his hotel to check them out and asked me to play for him some of his tunes; he liked my job and told me that if I wanted to finish the work he could use them on his website for free, I did it and they stayed there for a couple of years. Then the Mel Bay book came out and they had to remove them. Please tell me more regarding the training you are proposing via “skype”I just use technology: I can see students, they can play for me, I can play for them, I can see if they make mistakes or play in a wrong way and try to suggest them how to improve their playing, it’s fun!As you have made two solo albums together with two tablatures’ librettos , is it important for you to transcribe when playing your cds. Are you contemplating to mention on your website some tablatures on a free basis, as some guitarists do?My new website is online, there’s new stuff like videos, mp3’s and tablatures, always updated with things like my Fingerstyle Blues Guitar videos, they will be online in a while. It’s a book for teaching I just finished.More information about your musical patch and the way which led you to play the guitar will be quite appreciated.I started with classical guitar when I was very young, I still have nails on my right hand. I love nylon strings. Then I learnt some fingerpicking and alternating bass from a teacher many years ago.I have been playing electric guitar since I was a kid and played everything from Stevie Ray Vaughan to Jimi Hendrix, Richie Blackmore and Jimmy Page; I love Blues and all the great players there, as country, rock’n’roll, jazz. I studied music and I know harmony pretty well, that’s what I always teach along with the guitar technique.I still play electric, you can see a few videos on my website.I started to play acoustic guitar in the middle ‘90s, but I discovered a few years after that it was another instrument, I used to play it like if it was an electric! Then with Internet I discovered the great acoustic players like Michael Hedges and Leo Kottke, then Tommy Emmanuel, and everything changed.I started being a fingerstyle player very late compared to other players (I had been a pro for more than 10 years with electric guitar), but I already recorded two solo cds and traveled many countries playing my music, I like that!Tell me more about the acoustic duo “Kozmic Blues”. Do you still play with them?I still play with the singer Gina Fabiani, we are a trio now and play original tunes in italian, it’s a new project with a very good double bass player, Lorenzo Feliciati, we have a small label producing us and we hope something might happen. Cross your fingers for us!With all my thanksYoursStefan I would appreciate your letting me know how you get to become a guitarist.During my youth I developed a deep love to Blues music. I could hear and feel something in it that I found in no other kind of music before. Especially the guitar sounds and players in that started to fascinate me more and more. When I heard Eric Clapton play for the first time it “grabbed” me. I bought my first electric guitar and never stopped playing since those days.Apart from performing mainly in Germany had you the opportunity to attend the "open stings" festival organised by Peter FingerI just returned from a trip to Australia where I played some concerts. The enthusiasm for my music and the many nice conversations were a great experience. Really lovely people.I will play a concert at another of Peter’s venues (Lutherhaus) in Osnabrück in October. Gigs in Great Britain (also in October) and Netherlands are planned. And I would love to come to France and play there. Hope that there will be opportunities for me in the future.I think that you play on "Maton's" guitar Is it to maintain your link with Australia .Tell me more about your link with Michael Fix with whom you played together on your last CDYes, I endorse Maton guitars here in Germany. I love the woods they use and the sound is great. And the staff at Maton is really friendly and helpful to me. I like the Australian mentality.Michael Fix and me played two duets on my last CD “Stringvoices”. Musically, things are very easy and “natural” between us. Michael is one of the friendliest colleagues I ever met. A great guitar player and in the meantime became a great friend, too. By the way, Michael has German roots.Stringvoices" your last cd is mainly made up of compositions. Do you have tablatures that you could mention on your webThe request for TAB’s of my music heap up. I think I have to start thinking seriously about writing and publishing a TAB-Book in the future.Do you think that 'fingerstyle" guitar will find a new public thanks to internet on the other hand , we get to know a lot more guitarists through videosIn my opinion, at the moment, the chances are higher than the risks. Although there is this problem of illegal copies of music dispread through Internet but for Fingerstyle music it is an easy way to expand audiences and degree of popularity. I am curious how this all develops in the future.By listening to your CD ,I found out a transcription from "sting" have you other similar pop musical transcriptionsOn my first CD “Blue daylight” there is an arrangement of Stevie Wonder’s “You are the sunshine of my life”. And I am working on some new at the moment. But I won’t reveal that now ;-)
What are your plans for 2009! Have you sceduled a musical tour in Europe ? I know that Michael Fix is contemplating to come to france may be you could come , too!Gigs in Great Britain (October) and Netherlands are planned. And I would love to come to France and play there. If there is a chance, that would be wonderful. And I want to return to Australia and maybe play in Scandinavia next year.Stefan Mönkemeyer
